Python String Index() Method

Description

The index() method for Python String examines whether string str occurs in a string or in a substring of string if the beginning index beg and also the ending index end are provided. This method is similar to find() but leads to an exception if a sub is not found.

Syntax

str.index(str, beg = 0 end = len(string))

Parameters

  • str - This indicates the string that is to be searched.
  • beg - This is the beginning index and by default, it is 0.
  • end - This is the index at the end and by default, it is nearly equal to the length of the string.

Return Value

Index if found otherwise it may raise an exception if str is not found.

Example

#!/usr/bin/python

str1 = "this is string example....wow!!!";
str2 = "exam";

print str1.index(str2)
print str1.index(str2, 10)
print str1.index(str2, 40)

Result

15
15
Traceback (most recent call last):
   File "test.py", line 8, in 
   print str1.index(str2, 40);
ValueError: substring not found
